The main objective of this paper is to present the behavior of different sacrificial anodes of
Mg, Zn and Al-Zn-In in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela. Initially, the lake water was characterized at the
assessment areas. Thereafter the anodes were evaluated in the field while protecting different
structures. The performance of the cathodic protection systems over time was evaluated periodically
by visual inspection, as well as measuring the polarized potential and drain current. This paper
presents comparative assessment of their behavior, not only from the standpoint of efficiency but
also economics.
Key words: Sacrificial anodes, Aluminum, Zinc, Magnesium, brackish water
