09315 Ongoing American Welding Society (AWS) Plastic Welder Certification Program for Welding of Plastics

The on-going Plastic Welder Certification Program, endorsed by the American Welding Society in August, 2008 will address the qualifications of plastic welders through a national testing program based on written test procedure and weld performance test data derived from destructive testing.

Plastic welding has been employed as a successful means of joining plastic materials of construction for over 50 years. Plastic welding has also been used unsuccessfully when untrained and unqualified individuals with little or no experience attempt to join these materials. While much has been documented as to the successful applications of these waxy materials in challenging corrosive applications through NACE’s “Managing Corrosion with Plastics” program, little emphasis has been placed on the qualifications of those welding these materials together. In applications where corrosive and aggressive chemicals are transported or stored in these materials, a faulty weld could result in health, safety or environmental liability for the property or equipment owner.

The on-going Plastic Welder Certification Program, endorsed by the American Welding Society in August, 2008 will address the qualifications of plastic welders through a national testing program based on written test procedure and weld performance test data derived from destructive testing. Individuals passing those tests would obtain certification as plastic welders by the American Welding Society. This testing program is the result of efforts of both the G-1A Subcommittee on Hot Gas and Extrusion Welding and the B2F Subcommittee on Plastic Welding Qualification.
