In recent years, the protective coatings industry has been obsessed with soluble
salt contamination, chlorides in particular, not because of any real understanding, but
because salts have been popularized. In the old days we did surface preparation. Today
we often hear about surface “decontamination.” Unfortunately most of what the coatings
industry thinks it knows about salts and osmotic blistering turns out to be very much
wrong.
