Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) has been implicated as the root-cause for the corrosion failure of a large number of wet, dry, and pre-action fire sprinkler systems, often resulting in costly repairs and litigation. This paper presents field observations and laboratory test results for several different fire sprinkler failure investigations conducted over the course of the past several years in a variety of locations across the US. Field experience with assessment data, basis for diagnosis, mitigation and rehabilitation recommendations to prevent recurrence are presented. Aggregated results of laboratory microbiological culturing of deposit samples collected from affected sprinkler systems are presented and discussed. Conclusions drawn from these results regarding the part that MIC plays in the corrosion failure of the various types of sprinklers systems are presented and discussed.
