Components of potable water treatment plants (WTP) are susceptible to corrosion due to constant immersion in water and proximity to chlorine environments. A case history of corrosion problems at an Army WTP located in atmospherically corrosive environment with a combination of heat and high humidity, will be presented. Some of the solutions for the corrosion problems included: (1) advanced National Sanitary Foundation (NSF) approved coal tar epoxy for trough and surface wash components in filter tanks and flocculation tanks and (2) high micro-silica restoration mortar for deteriorated concrete. Also, valve pits at the WTP were coated with a high solids coal tar epoxy. Corroded electrical control boxes were cleaned and polished, then recoated with urethane. Corroded rubber gaskets in the boxes were replaced with corrosion chemical resistant nitrile foam gaskets. These materials and coatings have resulted in restoration of the plant to its optimum operating condition, in addition to reduced maintenance, and increased safety, increased operational readiness and reliability.
