In 1996 the US Marine Corps delivered four High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) to AM General Corporation, the vehicle builder. The vehicles suffered from severe corrosion including perforation of the vehicle frame rails. The Marines requested that the company’s engineering department evaluate the vehicles and recommend changes to the coating systems to improve the service life of the HMMWV’s. Shortly after receiving the Marine vehicles, the Army supplied two chassis with perforated frame rails.
