Glycol/water mixtures supported the growth of a diverse microbial population. However, in laboratory exposure tests there were no indications of localized or general corrosion of welded or flat plate 316L stainless steel in microbiologically contaminated 35%/65% glycol/water mixtures. When glycol/water mixtures were mixed with natural chloride-containing waters (10:1) there was insufficient conductivity to sustain an intentional crevice. Additional testing is underway to determine the level of degradation and chloride contamination required to sustain localized corrosion.
