The paper details the metallurgical examinations performed to determine the cause of failure of UNS K31820/UNS N06625 studs used to secure extemal equipment to the hull of a ship. The metallurgical examinations and the discussion of expected environment conditions lead to a conclusion that environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) caused some of the stud failures. EAC failures occurred through the stud weld region, i.e., through a stud's weld, weld fusion zone and heat-affected zone (HAZ). The remaining failures were concluded to have occurred when the UNS K31820 portion of the studs underwent significant corrosion due to failure of the protective coating system.
