Monitoring of the electrochemical parameters and the chemistry of the environment in contact with high-level nuclear waste containers is important in confirming the model predictions of their performance. The presence of a partially saturated environment, thermally driven hydrologic processes, and gamma radiation pose challenges to the employment of sensors. A brief review of the type of parameters that need monitoring, type of sensors available, and their advantages and limitations is presented in this paper.
