Waterborne Acrylic Latex Coatings for Marine Topside Applications

Current and impending environmental regulations are leading to the development and use of new technologies in a variety of marine and protective coatings applications.  Among the various challenges presented to the coatings industry, the desire to decrease the level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in traditional solventborne coatings ranks among the most prevalent. One such example is the use of solventborne silicone alkyds for marine topside coatings, such as those described by MIL-PRF-24635E for use by the United States Navy, which can have VOCs up to 340 g/L.  A one-component, lower VOC maintenance coating would be preferred from the point of view of its continued ease of use and decreased environmental impact.  This paper describes an evaluation of several waterborne acrylic coatings as possible replacements for the traditional silicone alkyd marine topcoats.  Waterborne acrylic resins based on a new technology, where the latex particles adsorb onto the pigment and extender particles to form composite structures, have been found to provide excellent color and gloss retention.   The unique film structure resulting from the polymer-pigment composites leads to excellent weathering resistance relative to both the silicone alkyd and traditional acrylic latex coatings and will be discussed in detail.   In addition, the waterborne acrylics studied offer the potential to formulate coatings at VOCs as low as 100 g/L or below.  A comparison with solventborne silicone alkyds will be presented, including accelerated and natural weathering tests measuring color and gloss durability and corrosion resistance
