With more than half a decade of experience in oil sands coarse tailings lines and hydrotransport internal pipe coatings made from High Performance Polyurethane Elastomers have proven to extend design life of slurry pipelines by factors in the range of tenfold. Useful life extension is significantly higher in situations where erosion-corrosion conditions prevail. Under these conditions carbon steel corrodes very quickly and often alloyed steels or chromium carbide / tungsten carbide overlays are used for erosion-corrosion protection. But even such metallic solutions are somewhat prone to erosion-corrosion. Highly abrasion resistant elastomers that strongly adhere to the steel wall outlast overlays and alloys in such cases. With the introduction in 2015 of the first continuous wear monitoring system for polymeric internal pipe coatings that does not require a hole through the steel wall maintenance intervals can be optimized even further. This presentation will report on field experience with High Performance Elastomer coatings and with the novel wear monitoring system.
