Zinc rich primers; both inorganic and organic have been used by the coating industry for years, However, commonly used specifications such as SSPC Paint 201, SSPC Paint 292, ASTM D-520-I/II/III3, ASTM D-5214, ASTM D 65805, ASTM D58946, ISO 129447, ISO 203408, AASHTO Designation M300-039 and AASHTO R3110, are not fully satisfactory to describe requirements for today’s new coatings although they have been successfully used and most likely will continue to be used in the future as well. For this reason, there is a need for developing new, performance based approaches and standards that better address the needs of both coating manufacturers and end users. This paper summarizes the problems encountered by manufacturers and end-users relying on the available standards for materials and performance tests for zinc-rich coatings in today’s industry and presents some suggestions for improving them.
