The Study of Correlation between Coating Thickness and Long-term Durability Performance Applied to Storage Tank

In the Oil and Gas plant industry, coating plays an important role in increasing added value for the purpose of providing product functionality and protecting products as the final stage of all work.
In particular, heavy-duty coating refers to a coating system that can withstand severe corrosive environments such as sea, underwater, and coastal industrial areas, and has a durability of at least 20 years for structures that are difficult to repair environmentally and economically.

As a result of reviewing painting specification of various plant projects, it was confirmed that coating systems were various even though the condition of the storage tank were similar.
For verification of the optimal coating system of the storage tanks, the performance evaluation by coating thickness and coating material was conducted for 6 months based on ISO 2812-1 and 2 immersion test method. The solvent-free, solvent-borne, and phenolic epoxy paints were tested.
The solutions used in the Immersion test are sea water, NaOH, toluene and crude oil. In addition, the test is carried out by two laboratories to verify the reproducibility of the test results.
Based on this study, the optimal coating thickness and coating material of the storage tank for long-term properties could be verified and the performance trend by coating thickness could be confirmed.
