Pull-off adhesion testing of coatings is commonly used for product testing and qualification as well as quality control / quality assurance. However, initial adhesion values do not necessarily correlate with service life of coatings or their corrosion protection performance. Adhesion of several product chemistries to steel is examined in this study before and after immersion exposure. Results are presented within the context of laboratory corrosion testing in an effort to investigate the significance of adhesion testing in modern lining systems.

International standards, both ISO and ASTM, require that the attributes exhibited during an adhesion test are recorded as part of the results. What are these attributes, how should they be recorded and what value are they to the inspector and applicator in assessing the reason for failure? This paper looks at all these questions and asks should we be going further than we do in defining the mode of failure.
Adhesion is a physical property that is crucial in many coatings, sealants, and adhesive applications, be it automotive, marine, or aerospace for example. Pull-off adhesion testing is an important tool in evaluating a coating’s performance, particularly while comparing pre- and post-exposure results. No matter what the application, the method for testing adhesion along with selecting the appropriate testing criteria has been the subject of multiple studies and reviews in the historical literature.
