The purpose of this work is to study the impact of the quality of steel surface preparation and the level of soluble salt contamination on the performance and durability of protective coating systems. Steel panels were prepared using a standard method and controlled levels of salt contamination were applied to the panels. The performance of three offshore coating systems were investigated. The coating systems were 1) a single coat of a Zinc rich epoxy coating, 2) a two-coats system of Zinc rich epoxy and a high build polyurethane, 3) a three-coats system, composed of a Zinc rich epoxy, an epoxy intermediate and a polyurethane topcoat. The anticorrosive performance of each coating system was assessed according to ISO 12944 and ASTM D5894. The results show that the performance of each system has its own critical level of salt which can be determined, primarily, by exposure to the continuous condensing humidity. This study provides an unequivocal selection tool for the evaluation of the coating systems with a range of salt contamination levels.
