The interconnection from the topside platforms and vessels to the well heads and pumps on the seafloor is necessary to transfert power and data as well as hydraulic and other fluids to guarantee reliable oil extraction operations. The umbilical systems form this vital link and they must be able to withstand high mechanical and chemical stresses in harsh environments below the sea. Umbilicals are composed of bundled elements as electrical cables optic fiber cables tubes.. Super Duplex Stainless steel is the regular material for steel tubes because of its high mechanical performances and its high corrosion resistance. This paper deals with the investigation of UNS S32750 Super Duplex laser welded tubes for umbilical systems. Mechanical performances as well as corrosion resistance have been evaluated. The results show that:- longitudinal laser weld is as resistant as the base metal- high mechanical characteristics are guaranteed for the longitudinally welded tube as well as for the orbital weld- orbital weld meets the O&G specifications. Super Duplex laser welded tubes are a real alternative for the umbilical market.
