This presentation discusses how the Florida Department of Transportation has modified and amended its coatings material acceptance policy and contractor coating application requirements to improve corrosion protection of Florida’s transportation infrastructure.  The cost saving advantages to the State are estimated to range from $2.3 to 19 million/year. Currently, the Florida Department of Transportation can expect a maximum coating system service life of 20 years on new construction and 10 years for each subsequent maintenance painting. It is the desire of the Department to maximize the coating service life to extend to 40 years or greater. Therefore, higher performance coatings that are capable of meeting Florida’s unique environmental conditions with long durability, along with the surface preparation and application of those coating systems, are the targets of the specification modifications. In addition to extending the corrosion service life, the State is also committed to extending the aesthetic appearance service life of the structures.
