Development of Test Sites in Alaska to Study Atmospheric Corrosion Using Adjustable Test Racks

In colder regions, heavy snowfall and pronounced freeze-thaw cycles introduce complexities to the established paradigms governing atmospheric corrosion. To elucidate the mechanisms of atmospheric corrosion under Arctic conditions, four distinct corrosion test sites were established in Alaska, each representing a unique corrosive environment. Each site was equipped with a modern, multi-angle corrosion exposure test rack coupled with an auxiliary weather station. Two additional multi-angle racks are introduced, offering enhanced flexibility and efficiency in research deployments. Innovation is in the design of modular corrosion test racks that can be adjusted to three different exposure angles. Within these setups, five different metal alloy specimens were exposed at three different angles and different lengths of time. Following exposure, the specimens underwent analysis to determine corrosion rates and weather parameter correlations.

EAC presents a serious risk to structures and equipment operated in corrosive conditions. Nanolaminar or nanostructured zinc-nickel electrodeposited coatings are compliant with the composition requirements of ASTM B841 and F1941 (12 to 16% Ni: balance Zn). The term nanolaminar refers to the successive thin layered deposition of nanostructured grains (≈ 25nm); accomplished by modulating the electrodeposition into a waveform applied at defined time periods and varying current densities. Standard electroplating in contrast, applies a continuous DC current throughout the electrodeposition process, resulting in grains that while initially fine will coarsen as a function of thickness ranging to the micrometer range.

Aerospace assets are subjected to routine maintenance cycles to prevent, monitor, and repair corrosion damage. Currently, the maintenance cycles are determined according to its model and following its respective requirements document (eg: NA(1) 01-1A-509¹ or USAF(2) Technical Order 1-1-691).² A new paradigm of condition-based maintenance (CBM) is highly desired, as a given asset will require different prevention, monitoring, and repair maintenance cycles depending on where it is deployed. As corrosion is the degradation of a material in response to its environment, CBM takes into consideration the variability of the environment (the conditions to which an asset is exposed) when determining appropriate maintenance intervals and what should be done at each interval.

Experimental Design Considerations for Exposure of Surrogate Fe in Assessing Atmospheric Corrosion in a Marine Environment

A rigorous assessment of marine atmospheric corrosion at a controlled NRL test site in Key West Florida was conducted. Certain factors which have been previously implicated in the literature as controlling, or at least heavily influencing, the corrosion of engineering materials in atmospheric exposure were isolated and explored. In this study, low carbon steel witness coupons were exposed to assess atmospheric corrosion. In particular, the effect of steel alloy type, coupon width, location, and exposure condition were tested. Coupons were exposed under ambient condition, sprayed with sea water, or rinsed with clear water. Results were assessed in terms of steel mass loss. Several important findings relevant to experimental design of atmospheric corrosion were assessed. Coupons treated with sea water experienced substantially greater corrosion rates compared to coupons exposed ambiently. Samples rinsed with clear water experienced lesser corrosion rates compared to ambiently exposed samples. Furthermore, corrosion rate differed by location: coupons exposed closer to the salty ocean water experienced greater corrosion compared to ones exposed further inland. Coupons with a thinner width also had greater area-normalized corrosion compared to wider coupons. The results of this study will benefit the entire atmospheric corrosion community since it establishes what the best practices are for exposure.

Gearbox Corrosion Mitigation During Storage and Intermittent Operation

Gearboxes are one of the most critical pieces of equipment in a plant. Downtime because of gearbox failure can significantly impact manufacture and be very costly. An additional inventory of spare gearboxes is needed to minimize the effect of the loss. All gearboxes operating and during storage are susceptible to corrosion due to moisture condensation on the metal surfaces. The work describes oil additives that protect gearboxes during operation, layup, and warehouse storage. As was proved, the corrosion can be mitigated by adding a Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) to the system. The testing methodology to verify the effectiveness of the oil additives, as well as compatibility with the base oil, was presented. Based on the present work, a specification for gearbox preservation during storage was developed.
