The paint and coatings industry has witnessed significant change over the past 50 years. These changes have been driven by many factors including VOC mandates, safety concerns, advanced polymers and new demands of the end users and materials. One of those changes was the introduction of desiccant dehumidification to assist in the blast and coatings process of liquid storage tanks in 1983. The ability to indefinitely hold a blast by providing a dry climate mechanically set off the beginning of a technology that would continue to advance for years to come.

The use of temporary humidity control assisted in the recovery of multi-family housing structures in New Orleans after the city was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. The process of temporary climate control during re-construction contributed to the overall quality control of moisture sensitive materials, predictable schedules, on-time completion and elimination of indoor air quality problems.
Desiccant dehumidification technology has transformed itself into a sophisticated and mainstream method that is used in many blasting and coating applications today. Utilizing temporary dehumidification and remote monitoring equipment for a blast and coating operation for the Onslow Beach Bridge allowed the project to be completed in 30 days – twice as fast as is typical for the type of project. This paper also will discuss how a contractor realized significant fuel savings due to the use of energy-efficient equipment.
