Sulfur and acidic impurities in crude oils pose serious hot oil corrosion problems in crude distillation units (CDU) and associated vacuum distillation units (VDU), especially with the increase in processing of lowquality, opportunity crudes.^1-4 In the range of 200-400˚C, reactive sulfur compounds cause sulfidation corrosion of ferritic carbon and chrome steels in CDU, VDU, and front ends of downstream units operating at hot oil temperatures.^5-7 Over the same temperature range, naturally occurring carboxylic acids in crudes can be so aggressive that higher alloy, austenitic stainless steels containing >2.5% Mo are required for processing high acid oils.^8-11 Although sulfidation and acid corrosion occur over the same temperature range, they differ in two significant ways. Sulfidation forms an iron sulfide solid that is semiresistant to further corrosion and relatively insensitive to flow velocity. Acids form oil soluble organic salts that can be washed away especially in areas of high turbulence.^12-14

External corrosion on offshore O&G platforms is one of the biggest threats to asset integrity and its management is a large operational expense. Many operators now implement risk-based assessment (RBA) programs where all equipment is assessed periodically with the aim to reduce operational costs while maintaining integrity. Regulatory codes for offshore platforms in the GoM require a visual inspection of all pressure equipment and piping every five-years. In practice, this can equate to approximately 20% of equipment being inspected per year on a large-sized offshore platform (i.e., a topside weight of around 10,000 tons), with a rolling five-year inspection plan to balance the inspection workload evenly through time.

Blue discoloration of off-white sealant in contact with copper tube at medical facilities under
construction was observed. The copper tube was being installed to transport medical-grade gasses and the sealant was used as an acoustical and smoke sealant at through-wall penetrations. In some areas of one facility, galvanized steel pipes inserts were used as sleeves for the copper pipes through the drywall, while in other areas, the copper pipe penetrated directly through the drywall. Observations of the discoloration prompted an evaluation of the copper tube, sealant, and potential adverse interactions.
