Organic modified polysiloxanes are generally recognized as the newest generic class of high-performance protective coating. They have gained commercial acceptance over the last ten years and are now widely used in new construction, heavy duty OEM, marine and industrial maintenance painting. This paper provides an overview of the technology, describes the available types of polysiloxane modified organic coatings and their properties and briefly discusses some recent advances in the field.
The use of polyurea-based thick film coating materials for substrate protection and corrosion prevention has taken an exponential rise in the marketplace in the past 10 years or so. When properly installed, polyurea coatings offer a variety of performance characteristics.
Spray applied polyurea was introduced to the construction industry in the late 1980 s. By the 1990 s, polyurea floor systems were being installed using early formulations of polyurea, and spray equipment adapted from the polyurethane foam industry. Advancement in raw materials, polyurea formulations, specialized equipment and contractor expertise in recent years has provided increased opportunities for this technology to be used in a wide variety of concrete flooring applications.

Overcoating an existing bridge coating system can be an economical solution to maintain bridges. Overcoating eliminates the costs for removal of old, often hazardous coating systems that were possibly applied years ago. Traditional coating systems for steel have often used a sacrificial primer, barrier coat and topcoat, to provide good UV resistance and appearance. One fundamental problem with all organic coating systems is that there will always be some permeation through the coating. These systems are therefore sacrificial in nature and have a finite life. The use of multi-coat systems also dramatically increases application time, presenting problems both for new construction and maintenance projects.
