Research conducted at OakRidge National Laboratories in Oak Ridge, TN, National Research Council Canada, and many other institutions around the world have shown that controlling airflow through the building envelope is more important and effective in reducing heat loss and moisture transport than controlling vapor diffusion.
As the technology of dehumidification has developed over the last 25 years, the air conditioner has always played an active role, right along with its sister, the desiccant dehumidifier. The benefits of a refrigeration-based dehumidifier are both obvious and obscure.
Moisture testing of concrete substrates has become a common practice in the floor coatings industry. Even though most contractors and field technicians are capable of performing the testing, they don’t really understand what the data they are collecting means, other than the acceptance criteria established by the product manufacturer of the coating or flooring being installed.
Although moisture in the air and on the surface has always been a concern, psychrometrics has been a confusing and misunderstood area of the industrial coating business. Psychrometrics (the study of water in the air) is used every day in the HVAC and humidity control industries and the mechanical engineer or refrigeration professional may have a clear understanding of the concepts used in this realm.
This paper provides a description of the calcium chloride and relative humidity test procedures, the significance of the results, tips on interpreting the results, and the limitations of the test methods. We also present some of the other techniques used to measure moisture in concrete floor slabs, that are not as popular as the calcium chloride and relative humidity tests.
Hexavalent chromium is utilized for the purpose of providing corrosion inhibition on many DoD assets in the form of surface treatments and primers. However, hexavalent chromium is also a known carcinogen and environmental toxin. As a result, processes which involve the application of hexavalent chromium will likely face increased regulation in the future.
Application and curing dynamics of paints are rarely quantified over a wide range of varying climactic conditions; yet this information is critical to the final performance of the coating. There is a growing need among raw material suppliers, formulators, and applicators to better understand the performance of products under the extreme humidity and temperature conditions experienced during application.
A formulated nanoparticle dispersion increases the cross linking of waterborne protective coatings without reducing the formula shelf life. Among the cross linking-related improvements are MEK rub resistance, humidity and immersion resistance, tensile strength and blocking resistance. The findings are in accord with a non-covalent mechanism of cross linking.
