Biocides are used to control problematic microorganisms in the oil and gas industry. High doses of biocides cause environmental and operational problems. Therefore, using biocide enhancers to make biocides more effective is highly desirable. 2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide (DBNPA) is a popular biocide because it is broad-spectrum, effective, kills microorganisms immediately upon addition, and it degrades rapidly. D-amino acids are natural chemicals that have been used in lab tests to enhance biocides to treat biofilms. In this work, D-tyrosine was used to enhance DBNPA against Desulfovibrio vulgaris biofilm on C1018 carbon steel. After 7 days of incubation, the weight loss of coupons without treatment chemicals in culture medium was found to be 3.1 ± 0.1 mg/cm2. With a treatment of 150 ppm (w/w) DBNPA, the weight loss was reduced to 1.9 ± 0.1 mg/cm2 accompanied by a 1-log reduction in the sessile cell count. The combination of 150 ppm DBNPA + 1 ppm D-tyrosine achieved an extra 3-log reduction in sessile cell counts and an additional 30% reduction in weight loss compared with 150 ppm treatment of only DBNPA. The combination also led to a smaller maximum pit depth. Linear polarization resistance (LPR), potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectrometry (EIS) tests corroborated the enhancement effects.

The introduction of water and the absence of flow during hydrostatic testing or layup of pipelines can lead to internal corrosion, making corrosion control a critical concern. Various corrosion mechanisms may be active, including microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), under deposit corrosion (UDC), and oxygen corrosion, depending on the service and operating conditions of the pipeline. Chemical treatment is typically used to control corrosion during hydrotesting or layup, but it must be targeted at the applicable corrosion mechanisms and remain effective over the duration of hydrostatic test or layup period. Additionally, the applied chemical treatment must reach metal surfaces susceptible to corrosion. This paper highlights the approach for selection of appropriate mitigation strategy for internal corrosion prevention as part of hydrostatic testing and wet layup. This paper also presents two case studies that illustrate the processes used to identify likely corrosion mechanisms and perform laboratory studies to examine the effects of various chemical mitigation solutions for hydrostatic testing and wet layup.

Although Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) is a critical damage mechanism that had been researched for decades in different environments, yet diagnosing a specific industrial failure to be attributed to MIC can still be challenging. The challenge of accurately identifying an MIC failure is partially due to the similarity of the failure morphology with other damage mechanisms, e.g., pitting corrosion due to chloride. Furthermore, the variously proposed initiation and propagation mechanisms for different types of bacteria may illustrate to the failure analyst that the MIC mechanisms are not yet well established. The confusion of MIC failure identification could also be aggravated by the fact that the presence of bacteria in a system does not necessarily mean that MIC is the culprit. Therefore, this paper will shed some light on the overlapping areas between MIC and pitting corrosion, especially the morphology of the attack. Moreover, several steps will be highlighted and discussed on how to correctly identify if MIC is the culprit in a specific failure.
