The market for protective linings in the oil and gas sector has evolved in the last 30 years, reflecting on both increased performance demands and productivity demands. This paper will review the successes seen with tank linings and the changes seen within the market (legislative, HSE and more aggressive conditions), later, via a case study it will elaborate how these have steered R&D in the development of the next generation of high-performance linings.
Finally, the relevance of the American Petroleum Guidance (API652 and 653) to establish their continued relevance in lining selection and inspection intervals will be reviewed along with the utilization of linings to support changing demands (increased life expectancy and inspection intervals).

The Replica Tape method is a trusted method used by inspectors worldwide for decades to measure surface profile height. Previous studies have shown the method to be highly precise and accurate, but an intricate burnishing technique and requirement to average two different grades of replica tape in some measurement ranges made the method challenging for some users. This paper details two proposed changes to the method: an updated burnishing tool and linearized measurement scale to eliminate the need for averaging. A study was conducted to determine the accuracy and precision of this updated method, involving measurements performed by 15 users of varied experience on a range of test panels blasted with varying of media and profile heights.

Metallurgical Analysis of 30-Inch Pipe Containing an Internal Crack

Pipeline defects are routinely found in the oil and gas industry. Most often they are minor, and do not affect the integrity and safety of the pipeline. However, in some cases, identifying and repairing critical defects is mandated to ensure long term integrity, which also entails choosing an appropriate repair technique. In this case study, we present a metallurgical examination of a 1949-vintage Grade X52 pipe containing an internal crack that was first identified at a client site. Laboratory examination confirmed that the feature was a pre-existing imperfection or defect, which had been weld repaired around the time of manufacturing or installation. Grinding marks and a distinct weld zone with three welding passes were observed in the region surrounding the crack. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) fractography of the crack surface indicated the presence of columnar grains close to the inside surface that are typical of a carbon steel weld. Methods to Assess Carburization Damage and Remaining Life in Fired Heater Tubes

Fired heaters in coking service are susceptible to carburization damage, which needs to be predicted and managed to prevent unexpected downtime and expedited replacement costs. Carburization damage occurs when carbonaceous material, i.e., coke, is deposited on a steel surface and exposed to high metal temperatures; such are the internal conditions present in fired heater tubes in coking services. At these high temperatures, the carbon diffuses into the steel microstructure and increases the hardness while reducing ductility. At an advanced state, this reduction in ductility may lead to tube failure if a mechanical or thermal shock is applied. The diffusion of carbon can also cause the formation of deleterious chromium carbides in the steel microstructure, reducing the high temperature corrosion resistance in those areas.
