Commercial & Residential Coatings Inspection is emerging as a new market that will provide tactical and ground floor opportunities to those involved while bringing additional value to the architectural coatings industry as a whole. This presentation will provide insight to the participants on the recommended experience, skill set, and education required to set up a successful Commercial Coating inspection service or agency.
The purpose of surface preparation is to get a required adhesion between steel and the coated film. Adhesion is a significant factor for the suitability and life of protective coatings in corrosive surroundings. In the shipbuilding industry, air blasting with round blasting nozzles is common practice for achieving the productivity and proper surface profile. Generally, the round blasting nozzle cannot evenly spread the abrasive material on a steel surface compared with a rectangular nozzle.
Inorganic zinc-rich coatings (IOZ’s) are often considered the gold standard for corrosion protection in atmospheric environments. Frequently, zinc epoxy coatings are considered second best among the most effective coatings for corrosion protection. However, current zinc-rich coating technology is not exempt of limitations, such as poor mechanical properties of the film, rigid environmental application conditions, or the inefficient use of zinc particles for providing galvanic protection. Due to these limitations, a number of asset owners have made the decision not to use zinc-rich coatings to maintain coating systems in marine and offshore environments
At present multiple standards on blast-cleaned surfaces are in use depending on region and specifications of the project. However, most standards are relatively clear on the description of a surface some overlap each other. These overlaps are often considerate as the norm for the most comparisons between ISO and related documents, however, sometimes are significantly off. Some of these documents will be highlighted to compare the results and their impact on the coating job.
Conductive and static dissipative floorings and coatings are designed to provide protection from electrical charges causing harm to work or products. This presentation is designed to familiarize you with the phenomenon of Static Electricity, how it is generated and its effects on industry. We will then discuss ways to alleviate or restrict problems associated with ESD by utilizing specialized conductive or static dissipative flooring and coating products. Specifically focused on the common conditions and design considerations required for a proper installation, including substrate requirements, grounding and strapping recommendations, and product selection criteria.
When establishing the minimum conditions suitable for coating concrete, many coating manufacturers, and hence specifying engineers and contractors, generally rely on unrealistic moisture content and moisture vapor emission rate requirements. These compulsory values are founded on laboratory testing rather than field experience, or worse still, on supposition rooted in unachievable and unrelated requisites.
This paper will address both existing and new air barrier technology. Manufacturers, engineers, architects, trade professionals, and testing agencies will learn essential features of this emerging industry. Manufacturers will learn about the material properties and product performance requirements of air barrier coatings. Engineers and architects will learn basic building science principals required to create an air barrier utilizing coatings.
The performance of a Chemically Bonded Phosphate Ceramic (CBPC) coating was investigated for marine bridge application. Assessment of possible coating degradation and corrosion development was made by physical and electrochemical techniques. Passive-like conditions developed in the chloride-free solutions and formation of oxide product occurred in the chloride solutions. A large degree of oxide product formation throughout the non-scribed coating exposure surface area, consistent with the large, measured corrosion current, was indicative that the ceramic coating had poor barrier coating properties.
Failure of flooring materials is usually due to a combination of factors rather than a single, simple cause that led to below expectation performance. For example, construction on a less than high quality concrete slab on grade, combined with the absence of a vapor retarder, with residual concrete wear and contamination, followed by inadequate surface preparation, and finally poor coating selection applied during inclement ambient conditions that is turned over early to severe service is a recipe for disaster.
Styrenated Unsaturated Polyester & Vinyl Ester coatings are accepted for use in chemical immersion tank linings. The primary advantage is the increased chemical resistance to harsh commodities and fast turnaround time compared to epoxy coatings. However, styrene is becoming heavily regulated due to its safety and health concerns.
