Duplex systems, also known as painting over hot dip galvanized steel, are extremely effective corrosion protection systems. However, careful surface preparation techniques need to be used to alleviate potential coating failures. The age and characteristics of the galvanized coating should be used to determine what type of surface preparation is needed. Surface preparation should develop an anchor profile for the paint without removing the zinc coating.

What would you say to someone if they accused you of intentionally accepting corrosion that led to damage or loss of military equipment, infrastructure and facilities or the injury, lost time, loss of lifer? The truth is, we do choose to accept corrosion and its negative consequences based on the tradeoffs/choices and limitations we are faced with. Scientists say that the average human makes thousands of decisions every day. Researchers at Cornell have found that the average human makes approximately 230 decisions a day on food alone.
Pull-off adhesion testing is widely used to assess the protective coating process. It is also used to determine if a coating is fit for service in new construction and for repairs to existing structures. The result is often critical to the acceptance or rejection of a coating process, as the adhesion value quoted by the paint manufacturer can be adversely affected by aspects of the coating process. Low adhesion values are indicative of premature failure of the coating and are often due to inadequate surface preparation of the substrate.
This annual paper summarizes environmental, health and safety issues that may impact SSPC members. This paper discusses current and expected EPA and OSHA regulatory rulemaking, emphasis programs, enforcement initiatives or other similar topics. This paper will include a review of OSHA’s expected final standards on confined space in construction and silica and other proposed or revised regulations related to the coatings industry. Most of the information is taken directly from the respective agency’s published regulatory agenda, supplemented by anecdotal information gathered from various professional journals, seminars, and conferences.
Steel surfaces are frequently cleaned by abrasive impact prior to the application of protective coatings. The resultant surface profile must be accurately assessed to ensure compliance with job or contract specifications. But is profile height alone (the most commonly measured parameter) a good indicator of long-term coating performance?
The spray-applied, two-component, ambient-cured polyurea, which features no VOC’s and low odor, can be applied at colder temperatures than current available coatings. This wider temperature application range extends the season for restoring outdoor concrete substrates. The technology provides quick dry times; leading to faster return-to-service and helping applicators and owners meet tight deadlines.
We often make decisions in haste, using poor factoring, not thinking through all the variables, ignoring risk, and a great number of other things we won’t mention right now but you can imagine. What decisions or effort do we do daily that could be enhanced by better decisions, and by default better process. A decision is made up of pieces, each piece providing a building block to the end. What pieces we use make a difference.
Silicone alkyds are single-component (1K) systems and do not require the mixing of components before application. These systems are easy for sailors to apply (via brush or roll), have an indefinite pot-life in a closed can, and will cure under harsh marine conditions, which are why these coatings have been utilized on the exterior topsides of Navy surface ships since the early 1960s. However, these “user friendly” coatings provide limited color and gloss retention, limited resistance to shipboard hydrocarbons, and limited resistance to staining from running rust and soot.
There are several design factors that need to be considered when specifying coatings in water and wastewater concrete structures. Issues include treating surfaces with exposed aggregate, with a low pH, and exposed reinforcing steel. This paper will present three examples of important design considerations based on field experiences that can avert lining performance problems and impacts on a project schedule or budget. Specific examples from a number of projects will be used to illustrate these design considerations.
This paper will discuss strategies for utilizing dehumidifiers and climate control equipment on blast and coat projects and will demonstrate how by their implementation, the contractor can be more successful by reducing overall job costs. We will take a brief look at the current core of climate control offerings. We will then examine how the manufactures of climate control equipment have tried to keep in step with the demands from the industry and of course, the customer.
Sustainable concrete repair products can extend the time in between repair cycles and increase the service life of a structure. This will discuss the fact that based on 10+ years of field and laboratory testing, organofunctional silane corrosion inhibitors are effective at corrosion mitigation, thus decreasing the frequency and extent of repairs. Evaluation on new concrete also showed a predicted increase in time to corrosion initiation when compared to untreated reinforced concrete specimens. Modeling results were verified in a 2-year laboratory study.
ASTM D7234 was first published in 2005, and updated in 2012 with precision statistics. This paper will go into the history of the development of the test method, the procedure and interpretation details that are critical to using and applying this standard along with a discussion of the factors that affect the precision of this method.
