Sol-gel coatings offer excellent properties such as scratch resistance, barrier properties, outdoor stability and high thermal stability. However, the precursors (silanes) used for these coatings are very expensive and require special care for handling and application on substrate. One approach to solve this problem is the incorporation of conventional organic polymer as the organic modifying component in silane coating formulation. Incorporation of organic polymer will reduce the cost and will make sol-gel coatings readily acceptable in industry.

CUI (Corrosion under insulation) refers to localized corrosion under thermal insulations, which pose integrity risks to the hydrocarbon facilities. 1 CUI is reportedly a driver behind 40-60% of failures in the facility piping. Inorganic zinc (IOZ) silicate coating was previously applied to partially fabricated low alloy, 21/4 Cr-1MoV, high temperature, hydrogen, reactor vessels for long-term storage corrosion protection prior to final welding and post weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 690-720°C (1274-1328°F). The need for complete coating removal to mitigate the known embrittlement and weld cracking that can occur after welding and PWHT led to the development of a novel, environmentally friendly method to remove IOZ to trace levels below 1 ppm.
