Alloy UNS N06058: A solution for demanding corrosive applications where common members of the Ni-Cr-Mo alloys experience their limits

The high performance alloy UNS N06058 contains about 21 wt.-% chromium and at least 18.5 wt.-% molybdenum. It is the first member of the Ni-Cr-Mo alloys intentionally strengthened with nitrogen. Based in the combination of its alloying constitutes this alloy is highly resistant to oxidizing as well as to reducing corrosive media. Evidenced by the high Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) number of about 86 the alloy UNS N06058 shows an outstanding resistance to localized corrosion as well.

The objective of this paper is to outline the characteristics of alloy UNS N06058 and therefore to highlight the successful use of it in demanding corrosive applications in the process industry and other sectors.

Main characteristics such as microstructure, mechanical properties and fabrication will be discussed. The very good weldability of alloy UNS N06058 has been verified by the German TÜV1. A matching filler metal, which is officially qualified according to AWS 5.14 (American Welding Society)2, is available. In addition, prior work shows that alloy UNS N06058 can be reliably explosion clad. Furthermore, corrosion resistance determined under laboratory conditions as well as in field studies will be presented not only for the base material but also exemplary on welded and cladded samples. Examples of applications will complete the comprehensive overview of this work.

This paper provides a real case study in regard to controlling the welding repair rate and NDT backlog in a company mega-project assigned to a new contractor. This case study shows the improvements in both KPIs, through the utilization of various quality and improvement tools, such as root cause analysis (Fishbone and Pareto chart), brainstorming, and PDCA cycle. The collaborative efforts between the client and contractor, including the welding and NDT subcontractors, resulted in reducing the WRR from 11.04% to below 5% (the set KPI). The NDT backlog was also controlled and reduced from 2500 joints to below 600 joints (less than one week production).

Some opportunities may be for newly built transportation lines while others may use existing natural gas pipelines that are converted to wholly or partially carry hydrogen. Saipem recently took a more integrated approach at production data collection and elaboration recently launched an advanced pilot project: the deployment of a vast data collection and analysis system in the production lines of its Flagship CastorONE. Data is collected from multiple sources by means of communication infrastructures and articulated network systems that allow to connect to different machines and equipment. The most meaningful data are identified and pre-filtered. The data are then processed, aggregated and subject to advanced analytics in order to extract useful information on the productivity, the main process parameters, building on its already available tools to manage welding productivity.
This enables Saipem not only to build an integrated, real-time, comprehensive representation of the on-going activities, but also to gain new and valuable insights on the efficiency of its vessels during and after the execution of projects, across different phases, making it easier to compare the productivity estimations with the field performances. The advantages of data-driven continuous improvement are discussed too. This paper will provide a general overview of the system and of the results reached.

Several offshore pipelines in Pre-salt fields, Brazil, are made of Super Duplex stainless steel. When welded, in general, these materials present a decrease in its corrosion resistance. Welding procedures, materials properties, surface conditions and post-weld treatment have influence on the resistance to local corrosion Although there is a strict control regarding the contamination of back purging gas with oxygen, sometimes, this control may fail and the oxygen content may exceed this limit. Understanding if the pitting corrosion resistance is affected by a higher oxygen level and how a post-weld surface treatment by pickling and passivation can improve the corrosion resistance is important in situations where the control of oxygen content is limited. In the present study, specimens welded with back purging gas containing 100 ppm and 200 ppm of oxygen and without back purging gas were investigated through ASTM (1) G48- A, and through ASTM G48 method E6. The pitting resistance was improved after post-weld surface treatment for super duplex stainless steel.
