Corrosion control of buried assets usually involves a double shield: a coating system as a physical insulation barrier, and a cathodic protection system as an additional ad hoc defense. Detection of a corrosion spot at the coating defect stage is the only way to identify the threat before significant metal loss occurs. Furthermore, detection of defects in the coatings of such assets is especially important, since large defects, if left unrepaired, will not only leave the asset locally prone to corrosion, but also drain and weaken the cathodic protection effectiveness for the entire structure. Therefore, identification and characterization of coating anomalies is critical for the integrity of buried assets.

Electrode Tool Logging Approaches for Casing Inner Coating Monitoring

To control the casing's severe CO2 inner corrosion and minimize damage to oil wells drilled into the Yan'an formation of Jurassic reservoirs; internal plastic coating was applied to the portion of the casing below the dynamic liquid level (nearly 700 m) for each of the more than 4000 wells drilled over the last 10 years. Considering the cost factor, it was not economic for the whole wellbore to have internal coating, so only the section with serious internal corrosion was internally coated with a modified epoxy-phenolic.

This kind of modified epoxy-phenolic coating has excellent mechanical and anti-corrosion performance. But it’s difficult to analyze the long term aging or local mechanical damage of downhole inner coating. New approaches by electrode logging tools have been studied for monitoring the inner coating.

Microbial contamination is a major concern in oil/gas system or industrial water operation where it can result in multiple major corrosion issues and efficiency losses. Chemical treatment is the primary means to control microbial contamination, but due to changes in temperature and water sources, this results in major shifts in the microbial levels and populations which can influence the efficacy of these treatments.

Due to the shifts in the number of bacteria and the change in the dominant microbial species, optimal dosage of biocide is very difficult. Inadequate dosage regimen will result in major losses, whilst excess chemical dosage will incur unnecessary costs whilst also increasing the environmental load. A quick, reliable microbial measurement will help identify critical control points in the process and will allow optimization of dosing of the treatment program.

Agar growth, ATP, and media bottle testing have long been the standard for microbial detection, but these can lack the specificity, sensitivity and response time needed to adequately address the changing conditions in the industrial system described. The molecular-based approach, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), described in this article, provides a near real-time method to measure bioburden, allowing operational decisions to mitigate issues to occur more rapidly.
