Alloy 52MSS has been developed for resistance to DDC (ductility dip cracking). It has been shown to exhibit outstanding PWSCC resistance in testing performed at the PNNL (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory). It also has good resistance to hot-cracking or solidification cracking as shown by transvarestraint testing performed by OSU (the Ohio State University). Alloy 52MSS welds exhibit an approximate 10% advantage in mechanical properties over existing nuclear welding products that contain 27% to 30% Cr contents. New modeling work has shown that 52MSS welds were predicted to undergo a precipitation of gamma double prime during post weld heat treatment of 1150F. / 48 hours that was expected to result in an increase of about 10% over as-welded mechanical properties. Laboratory heat treating and tensile testing of duplicate samples of 52MSS weldments have confirmed the modeling work and shown the mechanical property improvement. We are awaiting the further PWSCC testing results of specimens that have been post weld heat treated at 48 hours at 1150F.  that would reaffirm the outstanding resistance exhibited by alloy 52MSS in the as-welded condition. Higher mechanical properties are desirable for tubesheet overlays safe end overlays control rod drive mechanism sleeve installations and other nuclear equipment components.
