Non-Intrusive Systems for Monitoring Internal Corrosion of Carbon Steel Pipes

Internal corrosion is one of the major problems affecting the integrity of pipelines and equipments. For this reason the internal corrosion monitoring becomes of huge importance to anticipate problems and select the most appropriate methods to mitigate the corrosive process. Due to problems related to cost logistics and safety in the activities related to coupons' and ER probes' exchanges it is fundamental to seek alternatives to the currently used methods in order to optimize this activity. The use of a non-intrusive equipment to monitor internal corrosion is an alternative that aims to optimize this step ensuring reliability in the obtained data and faster results. These devices predict the tendency of the corrosion rate through equipments installed externally to the pipe/equipment without needing any access connection as the conventional techniques. In order to evaluate the non-intrusive equipments' performance tests were performed under dynamic conditions varying the fluid characteristics in order to verify the speed of response. The results were always compared with the ones obtained by conventional methods (coupons mass loss and ER probes).
