51316-7264-New Developments in Iron Sulfide Scale Dissolvers

This paper presents the latest laboratory results on iron sulfide dissolver evaluation. The recently developed dissolvers were studied for their dissolving powers using iron sulfide scale solids and the corrosion rate to mild steel at elevated temperature. Based on these results, the technical gaps and future developments for iron sulfide dissolvers are discussed.

While a thin film of iron sulfide scale is generally considered beneficial for sour corrosion protection a thick layer of deposit is detrimental for the efficient and safe operation in oil and gas industry. Iron sulfide scale has been a persistent problem in Khuff sour gas wells since its early production days. These wells were completed with low carbon mild steel and the produced fluids usually contain high level of acidic H2S and CO2 gases. Deposits on downhole tubular affect well deliverability interfere well surveillance and restrict well intervention. Phase analyses showed that the deposits usually consisted of a wide range of scale minerals which include different forms of iron sulfide iron oxides and oxyhydroxides calcium carbonate and iron carbonate. Attempts were also made to determine the deposition mechanism based on scale mineralogy and structure. Meanwhile extensive works have been carried out to identify the effective dissolvers. Dissolvers based on concentrated hydrochloric acid although with high dissolving power have limited applicability due to the overwhelming drawbacks such as corrosion and H2S generation. Therefore alternative dissolvers with low corrosivity and H2S evolution are highly desirable.This paper presents the latest laboratory results on iron sulfide dissolver evaluation.
