In chemical processes there is a possibility that localized corrosion (pitting crevice corrosion etc.) may occur in processes containing halides. This can make difficult the selection of suitable materials for plant construction. If high corrosion resistance material is selected equipment costs increase and process competitiveness decreases. If low corrosion resistance materials are selected equipment failures may occur and production costs increase because of product loss. However it is possible to select the most competitive materials by using corrosion surveillance and management of the service environment. This paper discusses the process of materials selection and corrosion management by use of advanced monitoring instrumentation.
