Material requirements are given here for four types of prefabricated plastic used in coating pipelines. Materials covered include pressure-sensitive plastic tapes, prefabricated plastic films with adhesive coating separately applied, tape laminates, and extruded plastic coatings. A general description is given of each of these types of coating materials followed by tables containing their physical properties and test methods.

This Standard is based on the service records of several types of prefabricated plastic films. The properties tabulated do not in themselves constitute the only criteria for the selection of a material for use as pipeline coating. They do, however, state the material characteristics necessary for identification of four types of prefabricated plastic film coatings which have proven performance records. The number of properties chosen to be listed in each of the several tables for nominal values of materials in common use is not intended to be limiting.

 Prefabricated plastic films for pipeline coatings should have the following inherent properties: high electrical resistivity, pliability and conformability, resistance to corrosive

Environments, low moisture absorption and permeability, and ability to remain in place on the pipe during its normal service life. Coatings should be of such a nature as to resist excessive mechanical damage during normal pipeline installation and operations.
