Sports facilities are constructed in nearly every city of the country and the world. Just as these cities themselves are unique in many ways, the facilities that serve the city’s athletes must also be unique. Programs for the design of these facilities must consider natural and man-made environments. But just how do these affect design and maintenance considerations?
Sports facilities are constructed in nearly every city of the country and the world. Just as these cities themselves are unique in many ways, the facilities that serve the city’s athletes must also be unique. Programs for the design of these facilities must consider natural and man-made environments. But, just how do these affect design and maintenance considerations? Solutions include operating roof structures, large overhanging sunscreens, nuisance and pest control, and coating systems that are designed to resist deterioration from salt laden coastal air, arid desert conditions, industrial fallout, excessive precipitation, and high humidity.
As a means of surface preparation for protective coatings, abrasive blasting provides proper surface roughness and increases the surface area, which are critical in achieving physical and chemical adhesion between steel surface and organic coatings. For application of high-performance coating in a new shipbuilding, the abrasive blasting cleaning is widely favored primarily because of its economic and performance benefits. The abrasive blasting, however, also requires the significant amount of labor hour, whereas its efficiency mainly depends on the blaster’s skill.

State Departments of Transportation let contracts for cleaning and application of protective coatings for steel bridge structures, but often lack staff with the training and knowledge to properly address technical issues that may arise on the project. The department’s engineering and inspection staff may be very skilled at administering a wide variety of construction contracts but lack the experience necessary to deal with the unique issues that often arise on painting projects.
A new water-soluble quaternary ammonium compound, didecyldimethylammonium bicarbonate/carbonate (DDABC), has been evaluated as a corrosion inhibitor via standard electrochemical tests on steel and shown to be highly effective. At the proper dilution, the inhibitor migrates to the metal/solution interface and forms a monomolecular film on the anodic sites.
