A low-cost monitoring system was designed to provide continuous real-time data on the presence of AC/DC underwater electrical fields. The system consists of a PVC support structure with four reference electrodes digital compass and mini-ATX PC with high-gain ADC board. The electrodes are arranged as an orthogonal triad: one central electrode is used as a common ground and three electrodes are offset by 1m in three orthogonal directions. The compass data is used to compensate for any rotations due to the water currents. The PC is remotely operated through a wireless internet connection. The system can be readily extended for continuous monitoring of corrosion rates or cathodic protection systems using additional inputs of the ADC board. A field testing was carried out at the Portsmouth Harbor (USA) to record data for a seawater corrosion study of copper alloys. The effect of the observed stray currents on the accuracy of corrosion data was analyzed.
