51317--9622-Laboratory Test to Evaluate Lean Duplex UNS S32101 and UNS S32304 Flexible Pipe Carcass at Sour Service

The aim of this test program is to provide technical data to support the replacement of austenitic flexible pipe carcass, at Campos Basin, by low cost materials with suitable mechanical properties and corrosion resistance when the field conditions turn too aggressive to carcass materials in operation.

The systematic studies to evaluate the corrosion resistance to Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) and crevice susceptibility of AISI 304 and 316L carcass material showed that serviceability limits to these materials can be extended to: 60oC 1%H2S/CO2 pH>4.0 60000ppm Cl-. Notwithstanding the present field conditions at Campus Basin is still less aggressive than the new serviceability limits just mentioned but the oil production scenarios may change to more aggressive environments in a near future. Therefore the test program was extended to more resistant materials such as UNS S32101 and UNS S32304. These two materials present higher corrosion resistance (PREN 26) than austenitic stainless steel 304 (PREN 18) and 316L (PREN 24). They are classified as lean duplex grade and are less expensive than Duplex Stainless Steel. Herein we are going to present the results of SSC U-bend tests and crevice susceptibility to Lean Duplex (LDX) and compare their performance to AISI 304 and 316L carcass materials in the same conditions. To LDX 2101 carcass on tests performed at 70oC 10% H2S/CO2 pH 4.5 100000 ppm Cl- no corrosion was observed whereas to 304 and 316L pits and cracks were found. However to tests carried at 95oC 1% H2S/CO2 pH 4.5 50000 ppm Cl- LDX 2101 carcass presented pits 304 and 316L pits and crevice corrosion. From the test results already analyzed there is a strong influence of pH on LDX 2101 corrosion resistance once to tests at 112oC 4% H2S/CO2 140000 ppm Cl- but pH 5.3 no corrosion was observed. Tests to evaluate the performance of LDX 2304 carcass under conditions just described are running and will be presented in this paper. The aim of this test program is to provide technical data to support the replacement of 304 and 316L flexible pipe carcass at Campus Basin by low cost materials when the field conditions turn too aggressive to austenitic carcass materials.
