Introduction to Zero VOC High Performance Waterborne Epoxy Systems in Industrial Protective Coating Application

Coatings designed for heavy duty applications in the Maintenance and Protective Coatings market are exposed to aggressive environments such as aggressive chemical solvents, marine atmospheres, UV light, abrasion, among others. In the US as well as other areas of the world, coatings designed for these applications have been primarily solvent borne.

There is a strong desire among all of the participants in the Maintenance and Protective Coatings value chain to reduce the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as the human health impact of these coatings. High solids coatings are one route to that objective and the other route has been replacement of organic solvents with water. Olin Epoxy developed a unique waterborne epoxy and hardener systems whose performance, when properly formulated, rivals that of the traditional solvent borne coatings. This paper will describe how we formulate the waterborne epoxy coatings; and two industrial protective coating applications including detailed performance results will also be discussed: (1) Metal application comparisons of experimental waterborne anti-corrosive primer vs. commercial solvent-based primer; (2) Concrete application in garage floor coatings.
