Erosion corrosion is a common cause of failure in hydro-transport pipelines. While there have been extensive studies on the erosive nature of silica sand very little work has been done examining and understanding the mitigation of the erosion-corrosion of metals in oil sand environments. This is a complex problem due to a number of factors such as the fluid properties flow rate sand size and shape and sand loading.

In this study a transparent glass vessel with a rotating cage assembly was used to evaluate erosion corrosion. The transparent vessel allowed for observation of the distribution and flow characteristics of the sand under varying rotation rates. Commercial and field sand at a 0 to 20 % loading were examined in synthetic brine/oil mixtures at 40 to 80 °C.

The erosion corrosion rates were quantified by weight loss measurements for both inhibited and uninhibited systems. The metal surfaces were examined using a high magnification microscope.
