A major issue for the use of corrosion resistant alloys in subsea pipelines and equipment is the possibility of hydrogen embrittlement due to exposure to external cathodic protection. This phenomena is now most commonly known as hydrogen induced stress cracking (HISC). In a previous paper in 2004 the author has examined the history of this phenomena in the oil and gas industry and provided a number of examples of the influence on subsea design. The knowledge and experience of this phenomena has increased substantially over the intervening years. This paper summarises the mechanisms involved discusses the more recent developments in the understanding of this phenomena and examines failures that have occurred. It assesses the use of standards such as DNV-RP-F-112 that have been developed to offer a more industry unified approach for certain CRA materials and the recommendations made by a variety of cathodic protection standrads and recommended practices on this issue. It then details the engineering steps taken during modern subsea design to mitigate this phenomena and assessment methods for existing subsea systems where this is now considered to be a potential problem.
