Corrosion and formation of heavy deposit has been observed in firewater piping in carbon steel with stagnant seawater on several offshore platforms. This has resulted in plugging and constrictions in the pipes. Many offshore installations that have been operated for several decades in the North Sea are currently being sent for decommissioning. DNV has received pipe segment from some of these 20 to 40 years old installations for examination of the internal condition. The aim of this investigation is to gain knowledge based on operational experience in the North Sea. Two carbon steel pipes taken from the firewater ringmain on two offshore platforms from the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) were examined. The objective of the investigation was to establish the internal condition, extent and nature of the deposits, determine mass of the deposit related to the observed metal loss and the dominating corrosion mechanism.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a promising technology that can keep the core value of fossil fuel power plants while significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Pipeline transportation is believed to be the most cost-effective and relatively safe solution in the context of CCS as it can transport large amounts of CO2 under well-controlled environments. However the transported sc-CO2 stream always contains certain amounts of corrosive impurities particularly SO2 and H2S. There is a stress corrosion cracking concern of sc-CO2 pipes because of the presence of high pressure CO2 stream and S-contained agents. Little work has been performed to address this issue. In this paper SCC investigation of pipeline steels in supercritical CO2 stream is conducted and the results are discussed. It is anticipated to support the development of CO2 pipeline standard and advance the deployment of CCS technology in a safe manner.

In gas-oil separation plants (GOSPs), multiphase crude is separated, degassed and then dehydrated before being shipped to stabilization plants for further processing. Typically, in ageing oil fields, the crude is accompanied by large volumes of formation water that is separated in GOSPs using three-phase production traps, which are large horizontal vessels, using a gravimetric separation process where water collects and settles at the vessel’s lower part.

The serious challenges for harvesting solar energy from solar power tower is the inherent intermittence caused by altering of day and night and by the weather event changes, posing a significant threat to the continuous supply of solar electricity. The most promising solution explored by the researchers during the last few decades would be integrating the thermal storage system with the Concentrated Solar Power Plant (CSP) to stabilise and provide the high-quality electrical energy at night or anytime without sufficient solar irradiance. Typical thermal energy storage system enables the CSP plants to store solar energy by heating the sensible storage medium, like molten nitrate salt in a hot tank.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a countermeasure for the global warming issue, and the number of CCS projects has increased. One type of CCS is Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), in which CO2 is injected into oil or natural gas reservoirs. Because formation water, which usually has a high concentration of chloride, exists at the bottom of these reservoirs, the injection tubing will suffer corrosion when the formation water flows back to the tubing. Stainless steels have been applied as tubing materials for Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG), and showed excellent corrosion resistance under high temperature and high CO2 pressure conditions. Martensite-based stainless steels bearing 13 mass% Cr to 17 mass% Cr are one of these tubing materials and are also expected to be used in CO2 injection tubing.

The rising demand for energy is creating an urgent need to develop a method of energy production that is sustainable cost-efficient and a clean alternative to traditional fossil fuel processes. Nuclear power is an option that has the potential to resolve these issues. Coolants in a nuclear reactor must possess certain qualities such as high volumetric heat capacity high boiling point low vapor pressure resistance to radiation and thermodynamic stability. In recent years there has been an increased interest in molten salts as replacements for water. Despite the potential for increased corrosion rates in the containment vessel molten salts minimize the risk of explosions because they do not need to be pressurized. Fluoride salts are the preferred candidates for a coolant material but the associated expenses and safety hazards make them unattractive for prolonged utilization. Chloride salts offer a safer and more cost-effective alternative but can be highly corrosive. Therefore careful consideration is required in the material selection process of the containment vessel. In this project two stainless steels (UNS S31600 and UNS S30400) and one nickel-base alloy (UNS N06601) were immersed in a ternary molten eutectic LiCl-KCl-MgCl2 at 700°C. The post-test coupons were characterized with optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The viability of the chloride salt as a replacement for the coolant material will be discussed.
