Application of DOE to Study the Effect of Environmental Parameters on Localized Corrosion

Localized corrosion is one of the main causes of damage of stainless steels in industrial applications which is often characterized by the pitting and re-passivation potentials. Depending on the polarization potential re-passivation can be perfect or imperfect as defined by Pourbaix.In order to predict the corrosion behavior of stainless steel in the presence of chlorides the Pedeferri’s diagram can be used. The diagram originally proposed for carbon steel in concrete defines corrosion and passivity zones as a function of the potential and chloride content. Localized corrosion initiation mainly depends on environmental variables like chloride content temperature and pH that affect the determination of different regions of the diagram.In the present work the effect of the aforementioned parameters on the Pedeferri diagram of AISI 304L stainless steel has been investigated by an approach based on design of experiment (DOE) method. DOE reduces the number of tests by introducing optimized experimental conditions as well as developing a regression equation by considering interaction among factors affecting the process of interest. Data for regression analysis were obtained from potentiodynamic polarization tests on stainless steel specimens. The Pedeferri’s diagram was determined for some fixed conditions and results were compared with other laboratory data.

Galvanized protective coatings have been used for structural steel to mitigate steel corrosion in atmospheric exposures and chloride-rich marine environments. The galvanizing process involves dipping steel elements free of surface mill scale in a molten zinc bath where the diffusion of zinc into the steel matrix allows for zinc-iron alloy layers of decreasing zinc concentrations by depth to form in the steel. Oher elements such as tin, antimony and aluminum may be added to the galvanizing bath to control reaction rates, surface appearance and corrosion behavior. Hot-dipped galvanizing provides corrosion protection by developing a barrier layer and in certain conditions provide beneficial galvanic coupling of the zinc-rich layers to the steel.

In the oil and gas industry, sand production can lead to blockage of pipelines, corrosion and erosion, which may cause the failure of the fluid transport system, pipeline leakage, and consequently environmental contamination. In the process of fluid transportation, the pipe walls are always impacted by particles entrained in flowing fluid. As a result, the corresponding erosive wear may be detrimental to pipe wall structural integrity. Although sand screens and gravel packs are frequently used to minimize sand production, technical and economic challenges or limitations with these practices are still present in the industry1.

Static pressure equipment mechanical integrity (MI) is most typically associated with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) as regulated under the Department of Labor. Facilities regulated under the Department of Transportation (DOT) including applicable natural gas and liquefied natural gas are not subject to PSM regulations including the implementation of MI management programs. Nevertheless, MI methodologies such as those prescribed in API 510 and 570 offer a suitable framework for integrity management of DOT-regulated pipeline natural gas facilities such as compressor stations, metering and regulation station, LNG Facilities.
