Application of DOE to Study the Effect of Environmental Parameters on Localized Corrosion

Localized corrosion is one of the main causes of damage of stainless steels in industrial applications which is often characterized by the pitting and re-passivation potentials. Depending on the polarization potential re-passivation can be perfect or imperfect as defined by Pourbaix.In order to predict the corrosion behavior of stainless steel in the presence of chlorides the Pedeferri’s diagram can be used. The diagram originally proposed for carbon steel in concrete defines corrosion and passivity zones as a function of the potential and chloride content. Localized corrosion initiation mainly depends on environmental variables like chloride content temperature and pH that affect the determination of different regions of the diagram.In the present work the effect of the aforementioned parameters on the Pedeferri diagram of AISI 304L stainless steel has been investigated by an approach based on design of experiment (DOE) method. DOE reduces the number of tests by introducing optimized experimental conditions as well as developing a regression equation by considering interaction among factors affecting the process of interest. Data for regression analysis were obtained from potentiodynamic polarization tests on stainless steel specimens. The Pedeferri’s diagram was determined for some fixed conditions and results were compared with other laboratory data.
