In Defense of the Monolithic Isolation Joint

The monolithic isolation joint is a sealed system, which obscures the individual components inside. How does one perform due diligence on a sealed, discrete system to ensure it will serve well over the asset lifecycle? We will set out a 5 section regimen.

At an earlier NACE Symposium an influential paper was presented characterizing the monolithic isolation joint as a weak link in pipeline integrity. We will examine the potential failure points identified in this earlier work and offer strategies based on experience in the field to ensure that monolithic isolation joints serve their purpose of eliminating the well-documented cathodic protection challenges historically presented by flanged connections. It is true that the monolithic isolation joint is a sealed system which obscures the individual components inside. How do you do due diligence on a sealed discrete system to ensure it will perform over the asset lifecycle? We will put forward a detailed specification including:Contractual requirements that monolithic isolation joints and their components are not just batch tested but individually tested. We will set out a 17-point regimen including pneumatic and hydrodynamic testing.A materials testing report (MTR) particularly for o-rings and GRE including temperature capacities and special attention to the glass transition properties of the GRE materials. All materials must be rated for 400°F or higher. Steel should be subject to the MTR and methods for creating the steel castings examined to mitigate against porosity.Plant tours and audits of manufacturing processes supplier management programs weld certifications and quality processes. Manufacturing practices must be designed to avoid damage to individual components including GRE and o-rings.Weld testing ultrasonically and for magnetic particles and welding equipment specifications for pipelines smaller than two inches in diameter.

Key Words:Monolithic Isolation Joint cathodic protection glass-reinforced epoxy specification weld integrity GRE glass-reinforced epoxy.
