Impressed current cathodic protection(ICCP) systems have been employed with coatings to prevent from corrosion on hulls of ice breakers. Many ICCP systems of vessels are designed not by analytical method but by designer's experiences. The purpose of this paper is to simulate the performance of ICCP systems on hulls under arctic conditions by a computational analysis based on boundary element method(BEM) and to find the optimized design. For this purpose an arctic shuttle tanker that will travel over Barents Sea was investigated. The coating breakdown factors at the end of the design life were assumed from 5% to 20% in accordance with different ice strengthning areas on the hull. This design optimization process consists of a series of calculations of the potential on the structure with several cases of ICCP system arrangements and target potentials of reference cells. The effect of these factors has been studied under arctic conditions. It shouw potential distributions of the hull and the optimizied design of ICCP systems is suggested resulting levels of protection under service conditions.
