Galvanic Cathodic Protection of Reinforced Concrete Structures

Cathodic protection is an effective technique to extend the service life of reinforced concrete structures. Historically impressed current cathodic protection systems have been used. These systems have been effective especially when they have been maintained. Galvanic cathodic protection systems offer the benefits of simplicity and reduced maintenance but are sometimes portrayed to provide only limited protection for a short period of time. This paper presents a series of case studies on the application of galvanic cathodic protection to provide long term cathodic protection to reinforced concrete structures. Case studies will include long term monitoring of field projects where cathodic protection criteria has been provided for over 15 years.
