51316-7212-Formation of Galvanic Cells and Localized Corrosion under Atmospheric Conditions

The aim of this study was to determine the mechanism of atmospheric corrosion of zinc in areas of local NaCl contamination and to define the driving force of spreading of electrochemical reactions using Scanning Kelvin Probe (SKP).

The separation of anodic and cathodic areas during atmospheric corrosion is governed by the distribution of the surface potential. Corrosion under atmospheric conditions starts after deposition of aerosols at the metal surface. The corroding location interacts with the surrounding passive surface forming a galvanic cell. For metals such as zinc, copper, and iron, the cathodic area spreads from the contamination. The area and the efficiency of the oxygen reduction as well as the surface ionic conductivity determine the corrosion rate. The aim of this study was to determine the mechanism of atmospheric corrosion of zinc in areas of local NaCl contamination and to define the driving force of spreading of electrochemical reactions using Scanning Kelvin Probe (SKP).

Key words: downloadable, Atmospheric corrosion, localized corrosion, scanning Kelvin probe, corrosion mechanism.
