Experiences with Coating Systems Selection for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub

The World Trade Center (WTC) Transportation Hub is a multi-billion-dollar project comprising WTC Tower One, the train station, and retail space. The structural steel and architectural elements require long-term corrosion and fire protection. The design of the buildings and various architectural elements within them presented many difficulties to providing the desired end-result.

The structural steel and architectural elements require long-term corrosion and fire protection. The design of the buildings and various architectural elements within them presented many difficulties to providing the desired end-result. For architectural elements requiring fire protection and an aesthetically pleasing appearance, the fabrication of the steel, particularly the shapes, were major factors World Trade Center (WTC) Site influencing the appearance.    For Tower One, fire protection of exterior steel that will be difficult to access after the building is completed, prompted investigations into engineered systems to provide the longest possible life cycle.    The antenna for WTC Tower One also presented challenges to providing a long-life coating system due to the complicated design, size of the sections, and fabrication tolerances.
