Recent trends in power generation and distribution have resulted in increased utilities sharing the same right of way. As a result AC induction on pipelines has become a greater concern both from a safety and corrosion perspective. Two primary methods exist currently surface grounding and deep well anodes. Both methods have their respective benefits and appropriate applications. This paper will examine the effective grounding resistance for each and also seek to determine which type of grounding is most suitable for mitigating AC induction on pipelines. Developments in AC mitigation and grounding techniques will also be examined to illustrate the future trends in AC mitigation practice and technology.
