The objective of this study is to evaluate the progression of Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria (SRB) biofilms in the presence of biocides at the same time with corrosion rate and bacterial growth which are considered the three most important parameters to face in a Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) problem. For this purpose a laboratory system was designed to directly observe the progression of sulfate-reducing biofilms in a flow cell simultaneously with bacterial growth and steel corrosion rate; the latter using a three-electrode electrochemical cell. The response of the three parameters was evaluated with and without the action of two biocides: one of them a commercial product based on THPS and the other formulated in the laboratory based onAzadirachta indica (Neem) leaves which has been claimed to have antimicrobial properties. Thus it is intended to obtain a correlation between the steel corrosion rate bacterial growth and progress of biofilms with addition of biocides as well as an appreciable efficiency using the natural biocide.
